Note taking strategies in listening

Notetaking is the practice of recording information captured from a transient source, such as an oral discussion at a meeting, or a lecture. It is an important skill for students, especially at the college level. In some contexts, such as college lectures, the main purpose of taking notes may be to implant the material in the mind; the written notes themselves being of secondary importance. follows are some strategies that you can use to develop your take notes while listening:

1) Review what you know

It is easier to take in new information when you already know something about the topic. Before you are listening, think about what you have already know about the topic. This will help your mind to receive new information and remember it.

2) Learn general words

There are many general words that are used to talk about ideas in the talk. These words can be used in many field of study such as science, humanities, business, art, etc.

3) Write down the most important words

During the listening, you do not have time to read every word that is said. You should only write down the words that have the most meaning in the talk. The words that are not important to the meaning of the talk are usually in the following ideas:

Pronouns: our, my, their …

Helping words: be, have, do, ….

Determiners: a, the, this, ….

Preposition: in, on, at, …..

Conjunction: and, but, so, …

4) Predict

To help you get ready to learn new information and listen more actively, think about what might be discussed. Think about everything you already know about the topic and make prediction about what is going to be discussed.

5) summarize

A good way to help remember while you are listening is to put the key ideas into your own words. This will also help you know that you understood all the information and that your notes are complete.

6) Recognize the language that signal the topic and big picture

Listen for words and expressions that are used to tell the topic. Also, listen for words and expressions that are used to tell the big picture of the talk. follows are examples of words or expressions that signal the topic
